Los Altos in California - USA

Population: 27,500
Tree lined streets and a small village atmosphere characterise Los Altos which is located in the heart of world famous Silicon Valley. Just 40 miles south of San Francisco, Los Altos is a residential community served by seven small retail areas. The seven square mile city is developed with small businesses, schools, libraries and churches.

Originally an agricultural town with many summer cottages, Los Altos is now an affluent bedroom community. Los Altos has several distinctive features. Los Altos' low crime rate, excellent schools and proximity to coastal foothills make it one of the area's premier cities.

Künzell in Hessen - Germany

Population: 16,500

The Rustington ‘happy wanderers’ with  their Künzell friends.

Künzell is a municipality in the district of Fulda, Hessen, Germany. It is situated 3 km east of Fulda.

In May 2007, thirteen Rustington Twinning Association members set off for Künzell, where they were warmly greeted by their German friends. A special event during their stay was the planting of an Oak sapling in front of the Town Hall (Rathaus) to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the joint twinning.

The Fulda Highlanders pipe and drum band, despite looking like a Scottish ‘import’ are all members of the local Künzell community and are first class players.

 TWINNING

Rustington and District Twinning Association

Rustington Parish Council, in September 1999, agreed to set up a “Twinning” between the communities of Rustington and Los Altos in California, USA. This was in response to a very enthusiastic approach from Los Altos who wished to establish a relationship with Rustington.

In 2002 the Council, again in response to an enthusiastic approach, agreed to set up a second “Twinning” with the Community of

Künzell in Germany. The independent Rustington and District Twinning Association was established to pursue the aims and objectives of these twinning links. The Association recognizes that nothing but good can come from meetings between people of different nationalities who wish to exchange ideas freely, and who seek common interests and experiences.

Since its inception, many great friends have been made in California and Künzell, with visits to both and return trips to Rustington. Students have been sponsored to go on Summer Schools

at Hessen University, Germany, and educational visits have been made to Los Altos, California.

The Association is now planning social events for its members and friends for the coming Autumn and Winter Seasons The Shuffleboard and Ploughmans’ Evening, previously arranged for Saturday 3 September has, unfortunately, had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, this popular evening has been replaced with a new Event, a Curry and Race Night, to be held on Saturday 22 October in the Guide Hall on the Woodlands Recreation Ground, Woodlands Avenue.

We are a self financing organisation, but do receive some small subsidy from the Parish Council for expenses incurred when our Twinning Partners come to Rustington. The current annual membership cost is £6.00 per individual, £10.00 per couple and £12.00 for a corporate

membership. The aims of the Association are to promote friendship, cultural and business interests and, to this end, Rustington Community Primary School in North Lane has joined and is already promoting ideas with a Kindergarten School in Germany.

If you are interested in joining the Association and require more information call either Julie, the Association’s Membership Secretary, on 01903 787097, or Don on 01903 772691.
