Tree Planting Scheme - Public Highway

Following the overwhelming success of the Tree Planting Scheme on the Woodlands Recreation Ground,

the Parish Council made an approach to the West Sussex County Council regarding the possibility of

members of the local community being able to donate trees for inclusion in the annual planting programme for replacement trees on the Public Highway. The County Council has now indicated that it would be happy for the Parish Council to extend its Scheme by having donated trees planted at suitable locations on the Public Highway.

The cost per individual tree would be £100.00, to cover the purchase and planting of a good quality tree, a stake, support and mulch/soil dressing. The watering arrangements would be the responsibility of the Parish Council, with the anticipated

assistance of adjacent residents. The County Council plans to include all planted trees in its ‘young tree maintenance programme’, whereby they would receive an annual visit for the first three years of establishment, when stakes/ties would be adjusted, and formative pruning carried out with mulch being re-applied. Unfortunately, commemorative plaques are not permitted, as these can prove to be hazardous when grass verge cutting is being undertaken by the County Council’s

Contractors. The first planting of any such trees, subject to consultation with adjacent residents, will be in the Winter of 2010/2011. So, if you are interested in donating a tree for planting on the Public Highway within the Parish of Rustington, please contact the Council’s Offices for further information, as soon as possible.

Councillors’ Surgeries

The Council is continuing to hold its Bi-monthly Surgeries, to enable members of the local community to have the opportunity to meet with a Councillor to air their views in respect of the way in which the Parish is managed, maintained and enhanced, as well as any other issues of interest or concern. Future Surgeries will be held at the Village Information Centre in the Churchill Car Park from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm as follows:-

Saturday 28 August 2010 - Cllr Mrs F Harrison

Saturday 23 October 2010 - Cllr J Bennett

Saturday 11 December 2010 - Cllr P Warren

Saturday 26 February 2011 - Cllr D Rogers

Saturday 23 April 2011 - Cllr J Ceiriog-Hughes

Request Corner ...

From time to time requests are received from local Charitable Organisations for the Council to publicise their services. Here are two we have recently received:

VOICE OF PROGRESS

Voice of Progress is a local Charity which distributes free audio-tapes and CDs for the visually impaired in the

Littlehampton area, which obviously includes Rustington. Each fortnightly issue comprises of approximately forty minutes of local news, and a similar length general

interest magazine.

If you, or anyone you know, might benefit from a local talking newspaper, please contact: Voice of Progress, Rustington Hall, Station Road, Rustington BN16 3AY

Tel: (01903) 776569 or Email: n.myer@btopenworld.com

There is no obligation - just cancel if the service is not for you.

SOFAS & STUFF

Sofas & Stuff recycle and repair furniture and white goods, which they sell on to people in need. They are based in Littlehampton, but are proud to provide a service to the residents of Rustington. The furniture and white goods are collected and delivered free of charge.

As well as providing a much needed service for people in need, the service also assists the environment. Through these efforts, items are able to be used again, instead of being sent off to landfill sites.

So, if you have any items of furniture or white goods that you no longer require, please contact Sofas & Stuff on (01903) 714812, where Louise and Emily will be delighted to hear from you, and will make the necessary arrangements for them to be collected at a time that is convenient to you.

Rustington in Bloom

The judging date for the South and South East in Bloom Competition has been set for Thursday 15 July from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. The In-Bloom Campaign is movingalong swiftly, with everyone involved anxious to maintain the extremely high standard set last year, when the Village was declared ‘Champion of Champions’ in the Competition. The judging route has now been agreed, with only a final few amendments to be made, and the roads

to be visited by the judges will include:-

Ash Lane, Broadmark Lane, Chatsworth Drive, Chaucer Avenue, Claigmar Road, Cowdray Drive, Cudlow Garden, Georgian Gardens, Harsfold Road, Holmes Lane, Manor

Road (Conbar Avenue Allotment Site), North Lane, Old Manor Road, Sea Lane, Sea Road, Seafield Road, Station Road, The Street, Windsor Drive, Woodlands Avenue and Worthing Road.

New projects to ‘wow’ the judges will include the Community Partnership Garden at the rear of the Museum and all that it offers for everyone in the local community, the refurbished and improved Chaucery Memorial in Chaucer Avenue, and the first of three newly designed and planted flower beds on a piece of land currently maintained by the District Council in Holmes Lane at its junction with Milton Avenue. The Committee has, this year, held a Design-A-Flower Bed Competition for all members of the 1st Rustington Scout Group, and the winner and runner-up entries have been selected, with the winning design being used for the aforementioned flower bed. It is hoped that both the Girl Guides and Village Pre-Schools will participate in a similar competition in future years for the enhancement of the remaining two neglected flower beds.

The Committee’s fund-raising efforts are proving to be most successful this year, with the Horse Race Night,

which was held on Saturday 6 March, raising in excess of £1,200.00.

NEWS

Chairman's Message

As I write this final message of my first year as Chairman, it is the day before the General Election. Having listened to all the talk and promises of the past four weeks it makes me very glad, and I must say proud, that Rustington Parish Council is Non-Political. At last, Spring seems to have arrived, although still chilly!

Apart from the gas works in the centre of the Village, which have had both an impact on trade and the usual clean tidy appearance of the Village, I must comment on the Spring Flower Displays which still look wonderful. The first of the fund raising events for this year’s In Bloom entry, “The Race Night” was a sell out and a great success enjoyed by all who attended. Look out for more events over the next few weeks! My thanks go to all who regularly contribute to make these events such great successes. I hope, like me, you are enjoying visiting The Garden Café, that will soon have the added attraction of the “Community Garden” which has been progressing well over the past few weeks. Both the Café and Museum continue to be very well supported by both locals and visitors to Rustington, with changing Exhibitions making visits varied for young and old alike.

Please support the Carnival on Saturday 19 June when, hopefully, the weather will be kind and enable us all to enjoy a great day.

I have really enjoyed my year; it has been a pleasure to represent the people of Rustington, meeting some wonderful people from the immediate area and also from neighbouring Towns and Villages.

Councillor Mrs Sue Lines
